Chris Watts, the man who killed his wife and two children in 2018, spent his 36th birthday isolated in prison. Other inmates and guards ostracize Chris, according to a source from People. Chris Watts’ life in prison is unsurprisingly difficult. The least-respected inmates are typically those who have killed their children.
“No one wants anything to do with him,” says the source. “He’s on the lowest social tier of the entire prison. He is in protective custody because if he’s around other inmates, he’d be in real danger. He’s an outcast, even among criminals.”
Chris will also go days without talking to anyone because he is often removed from general population. The guards also will not interact with Chris unless they have to. “He’s probably the most hated man in that prison,” the source says, “because he killed children. There’s a definite pecking order in jail, and someone who hurts or kills kids is at the very bottom.”
On August 13, 2018, Chris killed his wife, Shannan, after she returned home from a work trip. He then murdered his two young daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, and buried the three bodies on the oil site that he worked at. Chris was having an affair with a coworker for months before the murders, and he likely killed his wife and daughters to start a new life with his girlfriend. Shannan Watts expressed concern for her marriage in text messages with her friends, but never feared for her life.
Due to safety reasons, Chris was moved out of his home state of Colorado. He is currently at Dodge Correctional Institution, a maximum-security prison, in Waupun, Wisc.
There are several family photos in his cell. He writes to penpals, mostly women who discovered his address online.
“He’ll write his penpals this season, and they’re sending him notes, as well,” the source said. “It’s literally all he can do at this point.”
Chris Watts’ life in prison is lonely and repetitious, and it will likely be this way forever. A judge sentenced him to life in prison in 2018.
